It’s transformational, this singing of theirs. (At Island Gospel Centre, Bowser, BC)
At Island Gospel Centre:
Sunday morning shook me up. Imagine an unassuming church overlooking the blue of the ocean. We get there early to set up. A gentle crowd trickles in filling up the church hall seat by seat. Now insert a group of 6 loud, proud, faithful Maasai singing their hearts out on stage. Worshipping wholeheartedly not because it’s a live performance, not because they’ve just traveled across the Atlantic and North America to be on tour, but because, simply because, they are singing for God. It’s transformational, this singing of theirs. It’s honest, it’s real, it’s faith-based, soul-based singing. And I am being transformed. The people that hear them are being transformed. A few elderly walk forward to the stage to ask for prayer from the Maasai. They pray together and the paper-thin barrier of culture and language dissolves in moments as God takes over. Lukas, a younger maasai, tears up. The Maasai are a proud people yet here he lets the tears run as he prays and praises.
And so the warrior cries.
It’s transformational, this singing of theirs.
